Alpine Skier Lara Markthaler, South Africa's sole representative at the Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024, flew her team's flag with pride as she took to the snow in four disciplines, with her sights set on inspiring more participation in winter sport from the African nation and across the continent as a whole. The Germany-born 16-year-old, who holds both German and South African passports, finished 33rd in Women's Super-G. She also competed in Slalom, Combined Slalom and Giant Slalom. Sport has been part of Markthaler's life for as long as she can remember. She took to skiing at around 18-months old and has competed in professional mountain biking too. As a skier, she spends much of her time training in countries such as Italy and Austria, and also competed in Chile before arriving in South Korea.
