The United Arab Emirates has an average daytime temperature of around 24°C, but that could not stop two athletes becoming their nation’s first athletes to compete at the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG). Amenah Almuhairi, 15, and Alex Astridge, 17, both train at the Ski Dubai indoor facility in their home country and admit the transition to outdoor conditions has been one of their biggest challenges. Almuhairi finished 19th in Women’s Snowboard Slopestyle and 18th in Women’s Snowboard Big Air at the Welli Hilli Park Ski Resort in Hoengseong. Born to an Emirati father and Australian mother, Al Muhairi was introduced to snowboarding when she was seven.
