A finely judged race from Japan’s Arito Motonago was rewarded with gold medal victory in the Speed Skating Men’s mass start at the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) It was Arito’s second gold medal of the Games on the frozen lake in the historic Alpine Ski resort of St Moritz following his success in the Men’s 1500m on Sunday (January 13th). The pace-setter for most of the race was Max Flodorav of Belarus. But he only held the slenderest of advantages as the field gathered for the final sprint of the 10 lap 4,000m race. Arito from Hokkaido emerged victorious from the pack. Colombia’s Diego Amaya Martinez took the silver medal. Pavel Taran of Russia took Bronze.
