Description
The IOC offers the following Video News Release to all news agencies, broadcasters and online news platforms free of charge. While Brazil might be famous for football and fiesta, you rarely hear them mentioned in terms of winter sports. But not only have they competed in all three of the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG), but they have sent their biggest team yet - 12 athletes - to Lausanne 2020. Their best, if unlikely, medal hope is bobsleigher Gustavo Ferreira. The 17-year-old was hand-picked for the selection process on account of his athletic ability (he is a 100m sprinter), a tactic that several successful sliding sports nations have been using for some time. While he might only have taken up the sport 18 months ago, and has to deal with the challenges associated with only being able to train fully when either in the United States or Europe, Ferreira is making impressive strides already. Over the course of the eight training runs on the world famous Olympia Bobrun in St Moritz, he has finished as high as the seventh fastest out of the 18 competitors - no mean feat given how much experience some of them can boast. With racing set to get underway on Monday, Ferreira simply hopes to do himself - and his country - justice on the most famous sliding track of them all.
