Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama won the Men’s Figure Skating gold medal in the Lausanne Skating Arena thanks to a mesmerising performance in his free skating programme. It impressed the judges enough to allow the 16-year old from Kanagawa to overtake his two Russian rivals in their tight battle for gold. Afterwards, Kagiyama, who is coached by his dad, insisted his victory gave him the confidence to win at other tournaments including the Winter Olympics, Beijing 2022. Andrei Mozalev, the leader going into the free programme, had to settle for silver. His compatriot Daniil Samsanov won bronze. Kagiyama had been third after the short programme, and admitted nerves had got the better of him, but his brilliant free routine saw him overhaul a seven point deficit to claim gold.
