The IOC offers the following Video News Release to all news agencies, broadcasters and online news platforms free of charge. The Republic of Korea totally dominated the first day of the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Short Track Speed Skating competition winning gold and silver medals in both Men’s and Women’s 1,000m. The Women’s final turned out to be a battle between two South Koreans for gold and silver. 17-year-old Whi Min Seo, from Anyang Gyeo-gi, edged out her compatriot Chanseo Kim by just under a tenth of a second to take gold, Kim settling for silver. Canada’s Florence Brunelle won bronze. It was a similar story in the men’s 1,000m, another one-two for the Republic of Korea. 17-year-old Sangwoo Jang, from Daegu, won the sprint battle for the line. He pipped his compatriot Jeongmin Lee, also 17, to the line by 0.115 seconds, the pair congratulating each other after the race. China’s Konachao Li won bronze. Both competitions began with a preliminary round of eight heats, with the fastest 16 athletes reaching the quarter finals, then the fastest eight made it the two semi-finals and the top two in those going through to the final.
